Discipline Is a Decision: The Uncomfortable Link Between Desire and Results

It’s funny how the universe keeps handing you the same message until you finally stop and listen.

This week? The message was discipline.

Now I’ll be honest—discipline and I have had a rocky relationship.

Part of me knows it’s essential.

The other part? It wants to rebel the moment something becomes a “should.”

But the truth keeps showing up:

  • In a conversation with my coach about inviting more people into my coaching work—even when it feels uncomfortable.

  • In a business podcast that reminded me entrepreneurship isn’t about flow; it’s about showing up.

  • In Abby Wambach’s voice as she admitted she never wanted to run those extra sprints—but did it anyway because the outcome mattered more than the discomfort.

  • In a LinkedIn comment about preparing for weekend yard work—turns out, even grass grows better with intention.

And that’s what this really comes down to:

Discipline is the bridge between your intention and your impact.

In my I-CAN model, here’s how we build lasting momentum:

  • I – Intentions: Where do I want to go? Why does it matter?

  • C – Create the Plan: What’s the path to get there?

  • A – Act on the Plan: What consistent actions will I commit to?

  • N – Navigate When Things Change: How do I adjust when life throws a curveball?

But here’s the part we often skip: Acting on the plan when it’s inconvenient.

That’s where discipline comes in.

Here’s what it looks like in my world right now:

Intention

  • Build a community in Lewes

  • Run a strong half-marathon this fall

  • Expand Endurance Coaching this summer

Action Plan

  • Meet new people, go to events

  • Follow a full training plan

  • Talk about it and invite people in

Discipline Reality

  • Show up even when I’d rather stay home and read

  • Don’t skip strength work—even when I want to

  • Keep inviting—even when it feels vulnerable

I’m not chasing discipline for its own sake.
I’m chasing what it makes possible.

So if you’re like me—and you have outcomes that matter deeply—then ask yourself:

What’s one uncomfortable thing I’ll choose to do this week to move forward?

And if you're realizing that you’ve been stuck at the "I" or "C" stage—spinning in vision, but not momentum—this is the work I do with clients every day.
